Drewrys Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Drewrys Extra Dry Beer Can History

Produced by Drewry's Ltd., U.S.A., Inc. in South Bend, Indiana, the Drewrys Extra Dry Beer flat top can is one of the most recognizable mid-century regional breweriana issues. The South Bend facility, located on Elwood Avenue at the historic site originally established by the Muessel Brewing Company, became the central American production hub for the label following its origins in Winnipeg, Manitoba under founder E.L. Drewry.

For breweriana enthusiasts, Drewrys cans are celebrated for the iconic Canadian Mountie emblem, which served as a core trademark honoring the brand's northern heritage. The classic Extra Dry flat top design highlights the distinctive Gothic brand lettering set against a vibrant metallic, red, and white color palette. Depending on the production run, the Mountie appeared in various formats, shifting from a small medallion illustration alongside his horse to a bold, full-panel back illustration.

Beyond standard label executions, Drewrys was renowned for utilizing flat top cans as canvases for collectible consumer promotions, including their famous sports scenes, horoscope zodiac themes, and character series. Multiple variations exist across different canning suppliers, such as American Can Company and National Can Company, with differences spanning side-panel graphic placements, mandatory brewery text layouts, and lid tax stamps. Drewrys also made advertising history during this era with memorable marketing taglines, heavily promoting the slogan "More Flavor, Less Filling, More Fun!" decades before similar phrasing became widespread across the brewing industry.
