Drewrys Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Drewrys Extra Dry Pisces Can

This 12-ounce flat top can represents the distinctive Horoscope series issued by Drewrys during the mid-1950s. Designed with interactive and social appeal in mind, the can features a bright yellow reverse panel dedicated to the astrological sign Pisces ("The Fishes"), covering February 20th to March 20th. The artwork illustrates two stylized fish swimming in opposing curves surrounded by star accents, positioned beneath a personality profile highlighting artistic sensibilities, generosity, and an appreciation for beautiful surroundings. The can utilizes classic three-piece steel construction with a visible soldered side seam, filled at the South Bend, Indiana brewery.

Drewrys Extra Dry was marketed as an approachable, refreshing regional beer steeped in Canadian brewing tradition. Advertised alongside its iconic Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer mascot, the brand used memorable slogans such as "More Flavor, Less Filling, More Fun" to capture consumer attention. To create shelf standout and drive multi-can sales for social gatherings, Drewrys launched several multi-color thematic sets in the 1950s, including sports silhouettes, character-reading illustrations, and zodiac signs. These novelty concepts turned everyday beer packaging into entertaining conversation pieces.

Drewry's originated in Winnipeg, Canada, where Edward Lancaster Drewry founded the enterprise in 1877. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the company established American manufacturing in 1936 by purchasing the former Muessel Brewing facility in South Bend, Indiana. Operating as Drewry's Ltd., U.S.A., Inc., the South Bend plant anchored substantial distribution across the Midwest. The company expanded further by acquiring a brewery in Chicago, but increasing competitive pressure from national giants led to a merger with Associated Brewing Company in the mid-1960s, with brand rights later transferring to the G. Heileman Brewing Company.

Among breweriana enthusiasts, the Drewrys horoscope series stands as a prime example of mid-century set packaging. Flat top collectors especially value these cans for their imaginative astrological motifs, vibrant colors, and the rewarding challenge of assembling full sets across different signs and regional canning variations.
