Drewrys Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Drewrys Extra Dry Flat Top Can

The Drewrys Extra Dry Beer flat top can is one of the most recognized Midwestern breweriana items produced by Drewry's Ltd. in South Bend, Indiana. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the company expanded its presence in the United States by acquiring the historic Muessel Brewing Company facility in South Bend, where it established a significant regional brewing hub.

Graphic Design and Mascot

The lithography prominently showcases the brand's Canadian heritage, featuring the iconic Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer ("Mountie") mascot. The front display features the Mountie positioned beside a bold, stylized Gothic "D" accompanied by classic Drewrys script set against contrasting red, white, and metallic backgrounds.

Known Variations

Collectors document several variations across production runs. Notable label differences include:

• Thematic Back Panels: Select runs incorporated specialized reverse panels, including outdoor and sports action illustrations, as well as an astrological series displaying personality profiles titled "Your Character."
• Manufacturer Marks: Cans bear maker marks from major packaging companies, including American Can Company and National Can Corporation.
• Mandatory Text Adjustments: Differences exist in the layout of legal statements, tax declarations, and brewery address formatting.

Marketing and Collector Interest

Drewrys ran prominent promotional campaigns across Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and neighboring states, including novelty advertisements promoting that the sealed cans would float in ice water. Today, the can remains a staple of Indiana breweriana and an enduring representation of mid-century commercial can lithography.
