Drewrys Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Drewrys 'Your Character' Purple Can

In the 1950s, Drewrys Ltd. of South Bend, Indiana, rolled out a collection of decorative set cans aimed at enhancing retail shelf appeal and sparking conversation at social gatherings. In an era when regional brewers faced fierce competition from expanding national operations, these thematic releases offered engaging, collectible packaging.

Among the company's notable series was the "Your Character" campaign, which offered playful personality analyses based on traditional physiognomy—the interpretation of temperament and traits through facial features. This purple flat top can highlights the "Square Face" design under the bold header "YOUR CHARACTER and your face." Framed inside a dashed border, line drawings portray a man and a woman with distinctly angular, square jawlines.

Beneath the portraits, the text provides a flattering personality breakdown, reading:

"A square face indicates a person of discrimination, with rare attention to details. This man or woman is courageous, reliable, conscientious, loves the outdoors. Also energetic and ambitious, fond of excitement, must keep occupied constantly."

Drewrys produced various installments in the "Your Character" theme across different background colors and facial features—including nose, ear, forehead, and alternative face shapes—making them enduring favorites in mid-century American breweriana.
