Drewrys Old Stock Ale Flat Top Can

Drewrys Old Stock Ale Flat Top

The Drewrys Old Stock Ale flat top can represents a notable chapter in the history of Drewrys Ltd. U.S.A., Inc. of South Bend, Indiana. Founded initially in Winnipeg, Canada, by Edward Lancaster Drewry, the company expanded into the United States following the repeal of Prohibition by purchasing the former Muessel Brewing facility in South Bend. The brewery quickly expanded into a dominant regional powerhouse across the Midwest.

Drewrys Old Stock Ale cans feature the brand's classic identity, often highlighting the iconic Royal Canadian Mounted Police figure and distinct gothic typography that emphasized the brewery's Canadian roots. While Drewrys was widely recognized for its high-volume flagship lagers, the Old Stock Ale was marketed as a richer, traditional ale offering for consumers desiring a hearty profile.

Collectors can find several differences across production runs. Known variations include differences in can manufacturer marks from suppliers like the American Can Company, shifts in mandatory statement phrasing, and slight alterations to seam placement and background metallics.

Following the mid-twentieth century peak of regional brewing, increased competition from national mega-breweries led to corporate consolidation and the eventual closure of the South Bend plant. Because Old Stock Ale was produced in considerably smaller volume than Drewrys' standard lagers, authentic flat tops for this label remain highly sought-after pieces of Indiana brewing history.
