Drewrys Old Stock Ale Flat Top Can

Drewrys Old Stock Ale Flat Top

Produced by Drewrys Ltd. in South Bend, Indiana, the Drewrys Old Stock Ale flat top can holds an esteemed position in Midwestern breweriana. The brand traced its origins to Edward Lancaster Drewry's Canadian brewing ventures before establishing a significant presence in the United States following the acquisition of the former Muessel Brewing facility in South Bend.

While Drewrys achieved widespread market reach through its flagship lager and recognizable Canadian Mountie motif, Drewrys Old Stock Ale served as the company's traditional ale counterpart. The label art highlights prominent Gothic typography and incorporates the heritage slogan "A Famous Name Since 1877," celebrating the historic roots of the Drewrys label.

Manufactured with the American Can Company's "Keglined" process, the can exists in several documented variations. Collectors distinguish among versions bearing Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) text and non-IRTP releases, alongside subtle differences in side-panel legal mandatory text and manufacturer markings.

Because consumer demand at the time favored pale lagers, ale was packaged in far smaller production volumes. Consequently, surviving examples of the Old Stock Ale flat top are considerably more elusive than standard Drewrys lager cans, making it a standout addition to Great Lakes and regional breweriana collections.
