Drewrys Stout Malt Liquor Flat Top Can

Drewrys Stout Malt Liquor History

The Drewrys Stout Malt Liquor flat top can is a notable piece of midwestern breweriana tied directly to Drewrys Ltd.'s mid-century expansion into Illinois. While Drewrys maintained its primary operations in South Bend, Indiana, the company expanded its production footprint by acquiring the historic Atlas Brewing Company facility in Chicago. Cans bearing the Chicago, Illinois brewery mandatory credit reflect this distinct period of urban brewing history and are particularly sought after by collectors in comparison to the more common South Bend releases.

Manufactured by the National Can Company, the can features bold mid-century typography and branding tailored to the malt liquor market, highlighted by its distinct "Stout Malt Liquor" label. The stout malt liquor version was produced in substantially smaller quantities than standard Drewrys malt liquor, making it an elusive find for collectors.

Variations of the can exist across different production runs, exhibiting subtle differences in lithographic details, mandatory brewery credit statements, and side-panel can manufacturer markings. Following post-war market pressures and regional brewery consolidation, Drewrys eventually shuttered its Chicago plant, leaving this can as a lasting artifact of Chicago's industrial packaging history.
