Duke Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

The Prince of Pilseners Can

The Duke Beer 12 oz tab top can stands as a central piece of breweriana from the Duquesne Brewing Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Duke was the brewery's flagship label, heavily promoted across the region under the regal moniker "The Prince of Pilseners" alongside the familiar slogan "Have a Duke".

Design and Branding

The can's visual layout is anchored by the classic Duke character motif, depicting the brewery's royal mascot holding aloft a glass of beer within a prominent diamond frame. Accompanied by decorative scrollwork and strong typography, the label made use of a bold red, white, and gold color scheme designed for maximum shelf appeal. The packaging proudly identified its South Side Pittsburgh heritage, home to the brewery's famous landmark clock.

Packaging History and Variations

Duquesne operated during an era of fierce regional competition with cross-town rival Pittsburgh Brewing Company, even participating in early legal disputes regarding pull-tab trademark terminology. Packaging for the Duke brand was sourced from major can manufacturers, including the American Can Company and the National Can Company.

Among collectors, several variations exist across production runs. Notable differences include variations in side-seam construction—such as MiraSeam bonding compared to soldered seams—as well as slight shifts in typography, manufacturer logos, and the formatting of mandatory brewery statements. After the original Pittsburgh plant ceased operations in the 1970s, production of the brand transferred to C. Schmidt & Sons in Philadelphia, yielding further variations with updated brewery division text.
