Duquesne Pilsener Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Pittsburgh's Prince of Pilseners

The Duquesne Pilsener Beer tab top can represents a defining era for the historic Duquesne Brewing Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1899 on Pittsburgh's South Side, Duquesne grew into one of the largest regional brewing powerhouses in the eastern United States, famous for its cultural presence, the landmark South Side brewery clock, and the ubiquitous slogan, "Have a Duke!"

The face of this twelve-ounce container highlights the brewery's celebrated flagship branding, prominently displaying the famed "Prince of Pilseners" moniker alongside heraldic crest styling and classic Duke imagery. As national competitors increased pressure on regional breweries throughout the mid-twentieth century, Duquesne utilized modernized tab-top packaging and striking graphics to keep a competitive retail shelf presence throughout Western Pennsylvania and surrounding regional markets.

For breweriana collectors, Duquesne tab tops offer rich regional history. Various production variations exist across different canning runs, featuring subtle differences in side-panel mandatory text, brewery plant codes, and canning company stamps. Other known manufacturing runs show minor shifts in metallic background luster, seal designs, and trademark placements leading up to the brewery's eventual closure in 1972. The can remains a quintessential centerpiece of Steel City brewing heritage.
