Dutch Lunch Beer Flat Top Can

Dutch Lunch Beer Flat Top

Produced by the Grace Bros. Brewing Company of Santa Rosa, California, this flat top container represents one of the most recognizable regional labels from Northern California's brewing heritage. Operating out of Sonoma County, Grace Bros. built a broad distribution network by packaging both company brands and labels for regional wholesale distributors, including the General Food Products Company of Oakland.

Label Design and Visual Elements

The lithography features a distinct Old World motif anchored by an illustrated, jovial mustachioed man wearing a bowler hat, patterned waistcoat, and necktie. He is depicted raising a frothing, lidded beer stein. Above the portrait, the "Dutch Lunch" name is rendered in an elaborate Gothic-style serif typeface, while the lower black panel displays the word "BEER" in bold red lettering directly above the phrase "COOL BEFORE SERVING". The top margin includes the mandatory declaration "NET CONTENTS 12 FLUID OZS."

Identification and Variations

Collectors differentiate runs of the Dutch Lunch label by specific typographical and legal marking variations across different canning batches. This exact version is identified by the absence of the word "Brand" alongside the title and the absence of patent or trademark registration notices beneath the word "Lunch". In standard collector reference literature, this specific instructional variation is cataloged under Kevin Lilek's reference work as entry 208.
