Edelweiss Light Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Edelweiss Flat Top

The Edelweiss Light Beer flat top can stands as a prominent piece of Chicago breweriana, hailing from the Schoenhofen Edelweiss Company. Originating in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood at 18th Street and Canalport Avenue, the brewery was founded by Prussian immigrant Peter Schoenhofen. Over the decades, Edelweiss grew into the company's flagship label, turning the facility into one of the Midwest's largest regional brewing powerhouses. Notably, the brewery also left its mark on beverage history during Prohibition by developing and bottling the famous Green River soda to keep its facilities operational.

The can's lithography features classic mid-century commercial design centered around the traditional alpine edelweiss floral crest and bold typography. Depending on the canning batch, the packaging frequently showcased memorable promotional taglines, including "A Case of Good Judgment" and the rhyming slogan "Cheery-Beery."

For collectors, known variations exist across production runs, distinguished by differences in mandatory legal phrasing, brewery attributions, and can manufacturer markings along the seam. Reflecting the legacy of one of Chicago's major historic brewing landmarks before its later acquisition by Drewrys, this can remains a celebrated artifact of Midwestern industrial heritage.
