Edelweiss Light Beer Flat Top Can

Schoenhofen's Edelweiss Flat Top

Produced by the Schoenhofen Edelweiss Company of Chicago, Illinois, the Edelweiss Light Beer flat top can represents a classic piece of Midwestern brewing heritage. Originally established in 1861 by Prussian immigrant Peter Schoenhofen in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, the brewery expanded into one of the region's largest brewing operations, anchored by Edelweiss as its flagship label. During Prohibition, the company notably developed the famous Green River soft drink to sustain its facilities before returning to full-scale beer packaging in the post-repeal era.

The can's lithography features the traditional Edelweiss alpine floral crest and bold mid-century typography. Across its marketing history, the brand was tied to memorable promotional slogans, including "A Case of Good Judgment" and the rhythmic tagline "Cheery-Beery".

Within breweriana collecting, the Edelweiss Light Beer flat top is known to exist in different variations. Collectors identify subtle differences across production runs, including changes in mandatory text formatting, can manufacturer stamps, layout alignment along the seam, and the presence or absence of the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) notice. As an enduring artifact from one of Chicago's premier pre- and post-Prohibition brewing powerhouses, it remains a sought-after piece for regional beer can collections.
