Esslinger Philadelphia's Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Esslinger's Philadelphia Flat Top

Produced by Esslinger's, Inc. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Esslinger Philadelphia's Premium Beer flat top represents a standout piece of Mid-Atlantic brewing history. Esslinger’s established itself as an innovative local brewer, claiming the distinction of being the first brewery in Philadelphia to package its beverages in cans.

The design of the can highlights local identity with the "Philadelphia's Premium Beer" tagline boldly displayed across the face. Collectors frequently recognize Esslinger cans by the cheerful depiction of the brewery’s mascot—often referred to as the "Little Man" or "King Essie"—a bowtie-clad server carrying a tray. The can’s classic typography and bold layout make it a staple of East Coast breweriana.

Over the course of its run, several variations of the flat top can were released. These variations feature distinct changes in canning company markings, differences in metallic color schemes, variations in tax stamp placements, and changes in mandatory panel text. Related promotional runs from the brewery also featured vanity lids and trivia panels, adding further depth to the label's history.

Today, the Esslinger Philadelphia's Premium Beer flat top remains a favorite among regional can collectors and those who specialize in the historic breweries of Pennsylvania.
