Esslinger's Bock Flat Top Can

Esslinger's Bock Flat Top Can

Brewed by Esslinger's Inc. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Esslinger's Bock flat top represents a celebrated piece of mid-century East Coast brewing history. Esslinger's was widely recognized across the Mid-Atlantic region for its memorable marketing campaigns, colorful lithography, and seasonal releases. Among their portfolio, spring Bock issues stand out as particularly prized items for breweriana enthusiasts.

Bock beers were traditionally packaged and distributed in limited runs to coincide with the arrival of spring, making their accompanying cans substantially harder to come across than standard year-round lager or ale releases. Esslinger's issued flat top cans for their bock beer featuring distinct branding, prominently showcasing the classic "Esslinger's Bock" lettering alongside traditional seasonal imagery and brewery insignias.

In addition to standard label designs, Esslinger's issued bock beer as part of their famous "Parti-Quiz" and "Facts for Fun" series. While standard trivia cans were widely distributed across various metallic colors, the bock versions from this run are especially difficult to find. Collectors recognize multiple variations across these cans, which differ in background color schemes, typography placement, overprinted text designations, and manufacturer markings from producers such as American Can Company, Continental Can, and Crown Cork & Seal.

As competition among Philadelphia breweries grew increasingly fierce throughout the mid-20th century, Esslinger's utilized bold graphic packaging to stand out on retail shelves. Today, the Esslinger's Bock flat top remains a classic centerpiece for collectors specializing in Pennsylvania brewing history, mid-century graphic design, and seasonal bock cans.
