Esslinger's Little Man Ale Cone Top Can

Esslinger's Little Man Ale Can

Esslinger's, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was one of the city's historic brewing staples and among the prominent breweries that operated in the region following the repeal of Prohibition. Among the most recognizable artifacts produced by the company is the Esslinger's Little Man Ale cone top can, celebrated for featuring one of the most famous mascots in East Coast breweriana.

The centerpiece of the can's graphic design is the beloved "Little Man" mascot, a diminutive waiter dressed in formal attire carrying a serving tray. Introduced under the stewardship of the Brown family—who took over brewery operations during the 1920s—the character became an advertising fixture across Philadelphia. The brewery frequently brought the character to life for promotional events, parades, and advertising campaigns with live performers in custom vehicles. On this ale can, the character is prominently displayed against a bold, colorful backdrop.

Esslinger's was an early packaging pioneer within the regional market, becoming the first Philadelphia brewery to introduce canned beer. Collectors note several graphic variations of this can across production runs, including differences in text layout, brewery mandatory markings, and specific details depicted on the Little Man's serving tray. The design was also issued across different sizes, including standard twelve-ounce and larger quart formats.

Due to the enduring charm of the mascot and Esslinger's status as one of Philadelphia's legendary brewing institutions, this can remains a treasured staple among collectors.
