Eureka Extra Pale Beer Cone Top Can

Eagle Brewing's Eureka Extra Pale

The Eureka Extra Pale Beer cone top can represents a notable chapter in San Francisco's brewing history. It was issued by the Eagle Brewing Company, which operated out of a facility on Mission Street. The plant previously operated under names such as El Rey Brewing Company and Albion before adopting the Eagle name in the early 1940s prior to its closure.

Design and Characteristics

Manufactured by the Continental Can Company, this low-profile container features a two-sided graphic layout and bears the federal Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) declaration. Its bold lettering and regional branding distinguish it as part of a classic lineup of West Coast cans produced during this era. Across the brewery's operating lifespan, several design and mandatory text variations were produced on related labels, reflecting the changing corporate identity of the Mission District plant.

Collector and Historical Significance

Because the Eagle Brewing Company operated under that corporate banner for only a brief period, cans bearing the Eagle mandatory text were produced in limited quantities compared to larger West Coast competitors. The Eureka Extra Pale cone top is widely recognized by breweriana enthusiasts as a scarce regional survivor. Significant interest surrounds authentic examples when they appear at breweriana auctions, where cans from the Eagle and El Rey lineage often serve as centerpiece acquisitions representing pre-war California brewing.
