F & S Pilsener Beer Quart

Shamokin's F&S Pilsener Quart Can

The F & S Pilsener Beer Quart was packaged by the Fuhrmann & Schmidt Brewing Company, situated at Commerce and Washington Streets in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Rooted in the anthracite coal region of central Pennsylvania, Fuhrmann & Schmidt was a staple regional brewer with operational roots tracing back to nineteenth-century predecessors before closing in the 1970s after an acquisition by Philadelphia's Ortlieb Brewing Company.

Manufactured by the Continental Can Company using their Cap Sealed design, this 32-ounce can displays the brewery's signature "F & S" monogram shield alongside traditional script lettering for the Pilsener brand.

Among breweriana collectors, several variations of the quart are documented, reflecting changing federal labeling regulations and distribution networks across its production history. Earlier issues include the mandatory "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) text, whereas later iterations omit this statement following changes in federal packaging laws. Variations also exist across the side and seam text, with certain printings highlighting New York distribution and sales office markings to serve metropolitan distribution corridors outside Pennsylvania. Large-format containers from regional Pennsylvania independent breweries remain highly sought after by collectors specializing in Eastern Pennsylvania breweriana.
