F & S Royale Ale Quart

F & S Royale Ale Quart Overview

The F & S Royale Ale Quart was produced by the Fuhrmann & Schmidt Brewing Company of Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Originating in the heart of Pennsylvania's historic Anthracite coal region, Fuhrmann & Schmidt built a loyal following among local industrial communities, distributing its ales and lagers across the Mid-Atlantic. While lager accounted for the lion's share of regional consumption, Fuhrmann & Schmidt maintained a distinct ale portfolio, headlined by their Royale Ale offering.

Packaging and Design

Packaged in a thirty-two-ounce quart container, the F & S Royale Ale Quart features bold lithography centered around the brewery's recognizable monogram and traditional Pennsylvania brewing motifs. The design highlights the "Royale Ale" brand name alongside prominent brewery identification designating Shamokin, Pennsylvania as the home facility. The combination of clean mid-century heraldic graphics and the large quart layout provides generous display presence for collectors.

Documented Variations

Advanced breweriana collectors recognize variations across production batches. Differences exist primarily in federal tax disclaimer text—such as mandatory Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) phrasing on earlier runs versus non-IRTP side panels—as well as minor shifts in manufacturer markings and mandatory text placement along the rim and seam.

Collectibility

Among quart containers, ale cans were manufactured in substantially lower quantities than standard pilsener or lager counterparts. As a result, the F & S Royale Ale Quart is widely regarded as a standout centerpiece within East Coast and Pennsylvania coal region breweriana collections.
