Feiganspan P.o.n. Beer Flat Top Can

Pride of Newark Flat Top Legacy

The Feigenspan P.O.N. Beer flat top can represents one of the most recognized pre-war labels to emerge from the industrial brewing hub of Newark, New Jersey. Produced by the Christian Feigenspan Brewing Company, the prominent "P.O.N." initials emblazoned across the can represent the brewery's famous slogan, "Pride of Newark"—a trademark that became synonymous with the city's brewing heritage.

The Christian Feigenspan Brewing Company operated as one of Newark's brewing powerhouses alongside neighbors like P. Ballantine & Sons. The brewery was an early adopter of canning technology, partnering with the American Can Company to package their flagship lager in the patented "Keglined" container.

Collectors actively study the label evolution of this can. Several graphic variations exist, reflecting regulatory changes and subtle design shifts during the pre-World War II canning era. Earlier releases feature the mandatory Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement, while different print runs showcase variations in side-panel opening instructions, text placement, and copyright notices.

A notable milestone for the label occurred in 1943, when neighboring brewing giant P. Ballantine & Sons purchased the Christian Feigenspan Brewing Company, absorbing its facilities and bringing an end to independent Feigenspan canning. Because the brand was phased out after the acquisition, original Feigenspan P.O.N. flat tops remain sought-after pieces of New Jersey breweriana history.
