Newark's Pride: P.O.N. Light Beer

The Feigenspan P.O.N. Light Beer can represents a cornerstone piece of New Jersey brewing history, produced by the Christian Feigenspan Brewing Company of Newark. The prominent "P.O.N." lettering stands for "Pride of Newark"—a slogan and trademark that served as the brewery's defining brand identity across the Mid-Atlantic region.

Manufactured primarily by the American Can Company, this container was part of the mid-20th-century wave of canned beverages distributed across the New York metropolitan market. The design features bold, clean mid-century graphics with Feigenspan's classic brand colors and typography. Like many contemporaries from this era, it features the mandatory "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statutory markings printed alongside the brewery's mandatory legal statements.

Among breweriana collectors, several variations of the P.O.N. can exist. These differences reflect subtle shifts in brewery typography, canning plant markings, and text alignments along the seam.

Christian Feigenspan, who established the brewery in 1875, built the company into one of the largest brewing enterprises on the East Coast. The facility operated independently until its acquisition in 1943 by neighboring rival P. Ballantine & Sons, which marked the end of standalone Feigenspan production. Because the original Feigenspan brand ceased independent operations during the World War II era, cans bearing the standalone Chr. Feigenspan imprint remain sought-after relics from the golden age of Newark's brewing district.
