Feiganspan P.o.n. XXX Amber Ale Flat Top Can

Pride of Newark Amber Ale

Produced by the Christian Feigenspan Brewing Company of Newark, New Jersey, this can represents one of the premier pre-war and early post-Prohibition labels from the industrial Northeast. The prominent "P.O.N." initials stood for "Pride of Newark," a signature slogan that Feigenspan showcased across its marketing campaigns, bottle caps, and can designs.

Christian Feigenspan established his brewery in Newark during the late nineteenth century, growing the company into an industrial powerhouse that actively competed with neighboring titan P. Ballantine & Sons. The "XXX" moniker on the label referenced the classic brewing convention where triple crosses signaled extra strength and premium quality.

Collectors recognize variations of the P.O.N. XXX Amber Ale can that appeared during its packaging history. These variations feature subtle differences in factory text, mandatory Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) notices, American Can Company "Keglined" patent panels, and the presence of side-panel opening instructions.

The independent production of Feigenspan's P.O.N. line ended when the brewery was sold to Ballantine in 1943. Because of Feigenspan's deep historical footprint in Newark's storied brewing district, this flat top can remains a standout artifact of mid-twentieth-century East Coast breweriana.
