Fischer's Light Dry Ale Flat Top Can

Fischer's Light Dry Ale Overview

The Fischer's Light Dry Ale flat top can was produced by the Queen City Brewing Company of Cumberland, Maryland. Originally founded in 1901 as the German Brewing Company, the operation adopted the Queen City name and grew into a major mid-Atlantic regional packaging powerhouse. Operating along Wills Creek on Market Street, the facility distributed packaged beverages across Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and neighboring markets.

To broaden its market presence and compete against encroaching national brands, Queen City Brewing diversified its output by marketing specialized lines under various trade names, including the Fischer Brewing Company banner. Fischer's Light Dry Ale was released alongside companion products like Fischer's Light Dry Beer. The lithographed sheet metal can design showcases bold brand lettering and clean graphics, with metal containers manufactured by major suppliers such as the Continental Can Company.

For breweriana collectors, the can holds historical significance as an artifact of Cumberland's rich industrial brewing scene. Variations of this can exist among collections, distinguished by differences in mandatory legal wording, can manufacturer markings, and state-specific tax lids used for regional distribution, such as Florida tax stamps. Queen City Brewing remained an anchor of the regional beer market until closing in the 1970s, making this flat top an enduring piece of Maryland brewing history.
