Fischer's Old German Style Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Fischer's Old German Style Beer Can

The Fischer's Old German Style Beer 12 oz tab top can represents a notable chapter in Gulf Coast contract packaging, issued under the Royal Brewing Company name in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Brewery Background

Royal Brewing Company served as an alternate trade name utilized by the historic Dixie Brewing Company of New Orleans. Major regional brewers frequently registered secondary brewing identities like Royal to bottle and can budget brands, regional value offerings, and private-label contracts without diluting their primary flagship lines. Through the Royal label, the Tulane Avenue facility produced Fischer's Old German Style Beer to supply regional discount retail channels and supermarket shelves throughout the South.

Design and Visual Elements

The graphic design of the can leans into traditional Germanic heraldry and styling. Prominently featuring bold gothic typography alongside crest motifs and ornamental flourishes, the label reflects the mid-to-late 20th-century trend of using Old World imagery to market domestic regional lagers. The structured metallic color blocking and sharp typography make it a representative example of regional contract can lithography.

Collector Interest and Variations

While the Fischer's Old German brand was packaged at various contract facilities across the country, this particular issue is distinguished by its New Orleans mandatory statement. Regional variations exist across the brand family, showing differences in brewery mandatory text layouts, top lid vanity imprints, and rim specifications. For breweriana enthusiasts, this can serves as a key collectible for completing runs of Louisiana brewing artifacts and secondary trade-name labels associated with the Dixie Brewing Company.
