Fitger's Beer Flat Top Can

Fitger's Duluth Flat Top Can

Produced by the Fitger Brewing Company in Duluth, Minnesota, the Fitger's Beer flat top can represents one of the iconic regional canning designs from the shores of Lake Superior. Fitger's traced its lineage back to the mid-nineteenth century, operating out of its landmark brewery complex nestled along the Lake Superior shoreline before closing commercial brewing operations in the 1970s.

Design and Graphics

The can features classic mid-century breweriana styling, proudly displaying the Fitger's script lettering across the front face. Many issues incorporate the company's famous promotional tagline, "Naturally Brewed – Naturally Better," emphasizing the brewery's northern brewing heritage. The overall layout emphasizes Duluth regional identity, reflecting the company's standing as a dominant North Shore commercial fixture.

Collector Variations and Legacy

Collectors recognize several distinct variations of the Fitger's flat top can. These variations showcase differences in metallic paint accents, mandatory legal text placement, alcohol statement wording, and can manufacturer stamps from suppliers such as the Continental Can Company and the American Can Company. Over the course of its production lifespan, the can's graphic treatments alternated between metallic-tone backgrounds and bolder painted color palettes.

Because Fitger's maintained strong regional distribution across northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, this flat top remains a foundational piece for collectors focusing on Upper Midwest brewing history.
