Fitger's Beer Flat Top Can

Duluth's Iconic Fitger's Can

The Fitger's Beer Flat Top Can is a celebrated piece of Upper Midwest breweriana, originating from the historic Fitger Brewing Company located along the shore of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota. Fitger was one of Minnesota's most prominent regional packaging breweries, operating continuously through various eras of brewing history until its closure in the early 1970s.

The label design for Fitger's flat top cans features bold brand typography paired with the brewery's traditional heraldic imagery and crest elements. Many iterations sport an eye-catching metallic gold background complemented by deep reds, whites, and blues, prominently displaying the company's famous slogan, "Naturally Brewed – Naturally Better."

Among breweriana enthusiasts, Fitger flat tops hold significant appeal due to the brewery's rich North Shore heritage. Notable variations exist across production runs, including differences in mandatory text, state tax stamps, and metallic sheen. Additionally, promotional versions featuring factory-issued coin-slot "bank tops" were distributed to encourage saving, making these factory bank lids an intriguing subset of the label's history.

Today, the Fitger's Beer flat top remains a classic centerpiece for collectors specializing in Minnesota regional breweries, Great Lakes brewing history, and mid-century canned beer graphic design.
