Fitzgerald's Pale Ale Crowntainer

Fitzgerald's Pale Ale Crowntainer

The Fitzgerald's Pale Ale Crowntainer was manufactured for the Fitzgerald Bros. Brewing Company, located along River Street in Troy, New York. Operating from a prominent multi-building complex in Troy's industrial center, Fitzgerald Bros. stood as one of the Capital District's foremost regional brewing operations, distributing widely throughout upstate New York and the Hudson Valley.

Graphic Design and Labeling

The can highlights the traditional Fitzgerald's brand identity, utilizing sharp typography framed cleanly against the body finish. Graphic treatments span silver, dull gray, and cream backdrops, accented with bold red and black lettering that gives prominence to the brand name and pale ale designation.

Known Variations

Collectors recognize multiple variations across this can's production run:

• Manufacturer Text Blocks: Imprints from Crown Cork & Seal appear in different arrangements, including both horizontal and vertical text block orientations along the seam.
• Tax Mandatory Statements: Cans exist bearing the federal "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement as well as later non-IRTP designations.
• Lettering and Finishes: Known examples feature variations in background finishes—such as metallic silver, matte gray, or cream—along with differing shades in the typography.

As an artifact of Troy's industrial heritage, the Fitzgerald's Pale Ale Crowntainer remains a staple among mid-century East Coast breweriana collections.
