Foodtown Premium Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Foodtown Premium Beer History

The Foodtown Premium Beer can represents a notable entry in mid-Atlantic supermarket private-label breweriana. Marketed for the Foodtown supermarket cooperative, this can was produced under the Old Dutch Brewing Company trade name in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Brewery Background

The Old Dutch Brewing Company designation in Allentown was a trade name operated out of the Horlacher Brewing Company facility. During its operations, Horlacher sustained high-volume production by contract brewing and packaging store brands for various regional supermarket chains throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. By utilizing alternate trade names such as Old Dutch, grocery retailers like Foodtown could distribute their own proprietary branded beer lines.

Collector Context and Design

The can features the classic Foodtown retail identity, characterized by clean commercial typography and bold branding tailored for supermarket shelf recognition. Private-label store brands were distributed within regional grocery footprints rather than promoted through massive national marketing campaigns, making cans tied to independent supermarket cooperatives a specialized niche within breweriana collecting.

Minor variations in label text and manufacturing marks exist across different production batches, documenting the commercial relationship between Allentown's contract packaging operations and regional food retailers.
