Fort Pitt Special Beer Crowntainer

Pittsburgh's Flagship Crowntainer

Produced for the Fort Pitt Brewing Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Fort Pitt Special Beer can represents one of the most prominent regional brewing powerhouses of Western Pennsylvania. Operating out of its primary facility in Sharpsburg, Fort Pitt experienced a dramatic rise in regional market share during the post-Prohibition era, eventually becoming the largest brewery in Pennsylvania during its peak years.

Manufactured by the Crown Cork & Seal Company, this two-piece drawn-steel container showcases Fort Pitt's signature mid-century brand identity. The can features bold "Fort Pitt" lettering paired with the "Special Beer" designation and the brewery's established fortress-themed insignia, creating an instantly recognizable design on retail shelves.

For collectors, this can is notable for appearing in several recognized variations across its manufacturing lifespan. Known variants include cans bearing the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement alongside later non-IRTP releases. Additional variations feature differing alcohol statement clauses (such as specific statutory percentages by weight) as well as altered mandatory brewery location text following Fort Pitt's regional plant acquisitions.
