Fox Deluxe Beer Flat Top Can

Fox Deluxe Beer Flat Top History

The Fox Deluxe Beer flat top can represents a landmark in Midwestern breweriana and American packaging history. Produced for the Peter Fox Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois, the can served as the flagship offering for an enterprise operated by the Fox brothers following the repeal of Prohibition.

In late 1935, Peter Fox Brewing made brewing industry headlines by becoming the very first brewery in the state of Illinois—and only the eighth nationwide—to install flat top canning equipment. This early investment in canning technology propelled the brewery into national prominence, elevating it among the top-producing brewing companies in the United States during the 1940s.

The can's graphic design features bold Fox Deluxe lettering paired with the brewery's trademark fox mascot crest against metallic backdrops. Because the brand was packaged across an evolving era of packaging regulations and brewery expansions, variations exist across manufacturing runs. Collectors recognize differences between early releases bearing side-panel opening instructions and later non-instructional versions. Additional variations include Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) mandatory statements, varying American Can Company "Keglined" patent marks, and subtle changes to legal text as Peter Fox Brewing acquired facilities in neighboring states.

As a pioneer of canned beer in the Midwest, the Chicago-brewed Fox Deluxe flat top remains a classic and historically significant centerpiece for collectors documenting early American canning innovation.
