Fox Deluxe Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Fox Deluxe Flat Top Can

The Fox Deluxe Beer flat top can represents a landmark achievement in Midwestern brewing and packaging history. Produced by the Peter Fox Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois, this can housed the flagship beverage of an enterprise operated by the Fox brothers on West Monroe Street. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the company expanded rapidly, rising to become one of the top-producing brewing operations in the United States.

Peter Fox Brewing earned widespread recognition across the beverage industry by becoming the very first brewery in Illinois—and one of the earliest nationwide—to install flat top canning machinery. The brewery invested heavily in this emerging container format, a bold move that helped drive substantial distribution and elevated the Fox Deluxe label into a major regional powerhouse.

The can's graphic design showcases bold brand lettering alongside the brewery's trademark fox mascot emblem and heraldic crest against clean metallic backdrops. For breweriana collectors, the can is celebrated for its rich production history. Known variations exist across production runs, featuring differences such as early Opening Instruction panels, subsequent non-instructional releases, variations between enamel and metallic finishes, distinct can manufacturer marks, and changing mandatory tax statements.

As Peter Fox Brewing expanded its footprint across the Midwest, the brand was packaged with various regional mandatory texts. However, the original Chicago issue remains a centerpiece of vintage metropolitan breweriana, standing as a testament to early packaging innovation in the canned beer industry.
