Fox Deluxe Beer Flat Top Can

Fox DeLuxe Chicago Flat Top

The Fox DeLuxe Beer flat top can represents the flagship packaging for the Peter Fox Brewing Company, an enterprise established in Chicago, Illinois, by the Fox brothers following the repeal of Prohibition. During its mid-twentieth-century peak, Fox DeLuxe grew into a prominent Midwestern brand. The brewery made substantial capital investments to secure early flat top canning equipment, collaborating with major container manufacturers such as the Continental Can Company and the American Can Company.

Graphic Design and Variations

The can design prominently highlights the label's signature fox imagery alongside bold, stylized typography set against rich red, white, and metallic backgrounds. Because the brand remained on shelves through changing regulatory and manufacturing eras, several design variations are recognized by collectors. These variations reflect changes in can manufacturer trademarks, alterations to mandatory tax notices—such as the presence or absence of Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statements—and subtle updates to the layout and border trim.

Historical Significance

Driven by the popularity of Fox DeLuxe, the Peter Fox Brewing Company expanded rapidly through acquisitions in the 1940s and became ranked among the leading brewing operations in the United States by volume. Today, Chicago-market Fox DeLuxe flat top cans stand as significant artifacts of mid-century industrial graphic design and Illinois brewing history.
