Fox Deluxe Beer Flat Top Can

Fox Deluxe Grand Rapids Flat Top

The Fox Deluxe Beer flat top can represents a notable era of post-Prohibition brewing in Michigan. Produced by Fox Deluxe (Peter Fox Brewing Company) at their Grand Rapids plant, this container highlights the mid-century regional expansion of one of the Midwest's prominent brewing operations.

Historical Context

Originally founded in Chicago by the Fox brothers, Peter Fox Brewing Company acquired the former Michigan Brewing Company facility on Michigan Street in Grand Rapids to scale up packaging and distribution. During its period of operation in western Michigan, the brewery canned its flagship Fox Deluxe label to supply the regional market. The Grand Rapids facility remained an integral part of Michigan's industrial brewing footprint until the plant ceased operations in the early 1950s.

Label and Manufacturer Details

The can features the signature Fox Deluxe script and branding, framed by rich metallic detailing and the mandatory Grand Rapids, Michigan brewery statement. Depending on the production run, cans from this facility were produced with Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statements, while post-war releases phased out the statutory tax text. The lithography was supplied by major container manufacturers of the period, such as the American Can Company and National Can Company.

Collector Notes and Variations

Collectors document several label variations from the Grand Rapids facility, including subtle differences in metallic gold background tones, instructional panel layouts, and mandatory text placement. Because Fox Deluxe canned beer across multiple facilities throughout the Midwest, cans featuring the specific Grand Rapids mandatory remain key regional pieces for Michigan and midwestern breweriana collections.
