Fox Head 400 Beer Flat Top Can

Fox Head 400 Beer Flat Top

The Fox Head 400 Beer flat top can is a notable piece of Midwestern breweriana issued by the Fox Head Brewing Company of Waukesha, Wisconsin. Waukesha, long celebrated as the "Spring City" for its natural mineral water springs, served as the central selling point for the brand's identity. Packaging for the Fox Head 400 line prominently highlighted this geographic asset with slogans emphasizing that the beer was brewed with famous Waukesha water.

The can's visual presentation centers on the company's trademark fox mascot alongside bold "400" typography. The smiling fox motif was central to Fox Head's marketing throughout the mid-twentieth century, extending to widely recognized promotional campaigns featuring "Headley," a fictional fox character featured in novelty "Vote for Headley" election promotions.

Collectors recognize several variations of the Fox Head 400 flat top design. Differences among these variations include alternating slogans referencing Greater Milwaukee or Waukesha water, distinct can manufacturer marks, mandatory tax statement placements, and changing corporate nomenclature from the brewery's operating history leading into its acquisition by the G. Heileman Brewing Company.

As a prominent representation of Waukesha's post-Prohibition brewing scene, the Fox Head 400 flat top can remains a celebrated design for enthusiasts of historic Wisconsin beer memorabilia.
