Frankenmuth Mel-o-dry Beer Flat Top Can

Buffalo-Brewed Frankenmuth Can

The Frankenmuth Mel-o-dry Beer flat top can from Buffalo, New York, represents a notable chapter of mid-century brewery consolidation. While the Frankenmuth label originated in Michigan, cans carrying a Buffalo mandatory emerged after the formation of International Breweries, Inc. (IBI). The conglomerate acquired several regional producers—including Michigan's Frankenmuth Brewing Company and Buffalo's historic Iroquois Beverage Corporation—and began cross-canning regional brand names across its packaging network.

The Buffalo plant served as a primary hub for IBI, distributing Frankenmuth brands well beyond their traditional home markets. The Mel-o-dry Beer can showcases mid-century graphics framed by bold red and white accents, distinguishing the standard lager release from its green-themed ale counterpart. The mandatory text identifies International Breweries in Buffalo, making it a classic crossover artifact bridging Michigan brewing heritage with Western New York industrial packaging.

Major container manufacturers of the period, including the American Can Company and Continental Can Company, supplied cans to the Buffalo facility. Subtle variations exist across production runs, reflecting minor shifts in can company logos, mandatory phrasing, and lid vanity stampings. For breweriana collectors focused on multi-plant regional brands, this can stands out as a compelling artifact from the conglomerate era of American brewing.
