Furmann And Schmidt Pilsener Beer Quart

Fuhrmann & Schmidt Pilsener Quart

The Fuhrmann & Schmidt Pilsener Beer Quart is a highly regarded piece of breweriana hailing from the Fuhrmann & Schmidt Brewing Company of Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Representing the industrial brewing legacy of Pennsylvania's coal region, this large-format container was manufactured by the Continental Can Company as part of their Cap Sealed line.

Can Features and Branding

The can showcases the classic Shamokin brewery branding, prominently displaying the Pilsener designation alongside the Fuhrmann & Schmidt company name. As a thirty-two-ounce container, the quart was marketed for home sharing and social gatherings, resulting in significantly lower original production runs compared to traditional twelve-ounce containers.

Known Variations and Collectibility

Among collectors of Eastern Pennsylvania breweriana, quart cans are particularly sought after due to their regional distribution and striking shelf presence. Known variations of this can exist across production runs, reflecting evolving federal labeling mandates and minor design adjustments. Some examples bear the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement, while others were issued without it. Additional subtle differences can be found in the alcohol statement text, mandatory legal notices, and minor typography placements on the side panels.

Today, the Fuhrmann & Schmidt quart remains an essential centerpiece for collectors focused on historic Pennsylvania breweries and large-format packaging.
