G. E. M. Premium Beer Flat Top Can

F&S G.E.M. Premium Beer Overview

The G. E. M. Premium Beer flat top can represents a notable piece of mid-century private-label brewing history, produced by the Fuhrmann & Schmidt Brewing Company of Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Commonly referred to simply as F&S, the Shamokin brewery was a long-standing fixture in Pennsylvania's anthracite coal region, known for producing both proprietary labels and contracted store brands.

Background and Context

The G.E.M. imprint was associated with the Government Employees Mart (G.E.M.) membership department store chain, which offered a variety of discounted goods and private-label products. To supply its retail footprint, the chain contracted regional breweries across the country to package beer under their house label. Fuhrmann & Schmidt served as one of the regional packaging partners responsible for canning and distributing G.E.M. Premium Beer.

Design and Collectibility

The can features bold typography emphasizing the "G. E. M." name alongside the "Premium Beer" designation. Produced with bodies from major container suppliers of the era, such as the Continental Can Company, the container exemplifies the straightforward commercial styling common to mid-century retail-exclusive brews. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs and distributor releases for private label brands produced during this era. Today, it is an appealing crossover piece for enthusiasts who collect Pennsylvania breweriana, regional coal country history, and vintage store-brand cans.
