G. E. X. Premium Beer Flat Top Can

G.E.X. Flat Top Can History

The G. E. X. Premium Beer flat top can represents a notable contract-brewed label produced by the Fuhrmann & Schmidt Brewing Company of Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Known regionally as F&S, the Shamokin facility operated deep within Pennsylvania's anthracite coal country, maintaining its business through proprietary regional brands as well as private-label packaging contracts.

Retail Membership Heritage

The G.E.X. brand was created for the Government Employees Exchange (G.E.X.), a mid-century membership discount department store chain that served government workers, military personnel, and their families. To stock its shelves with exclusive, competitively priced house goods, the retail chain contracted regional packaging partners to brew and can beer under the G.E.X. name. Fuhrmann & Schmidt supplied cans for stores operating across the regional distribution footprint.

Can Design and Branding

The can's design utilizes a crisp red, white, and blue patriotic color scheme centered around bold block lettering that displays the "G. E. X." name prominently across the front face. The layout includes the "Premium Beer" designation and the required Fuhrmann & Schmidt brewery credits identifying Shamokin, Pennsylvania as the canning location.

Collectibility and Variations

Among breweriana collectors, store-brand and private-label cans represent a specialized collecting niche. G. E. X. Premium Beer is particularly sought after by enthusiasts focused on Pennsylvania brewing heritage, coal region history, and vintage retail private labels. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, showcasing subtle differences in mandatory text placement and can manufacturer markings.
