Gambrinus Gold Label Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Gambrinus Gold Label Overview

The Gambrinus Gold Label Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable transitional chapter in regional American brewing history. Named after King Gambrinus, the folkloric king and patron saint of brewing, the brand was originally established by August Wagner Breweries in Columbus, Ohio. Following the closure of the Columbus plant in 1974, the Pittsburgh Brewing Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania acquired the rights to several August Wagner labels, including Gambrinus, Mark V, and Augustiner.

Under Pittsburgh Brewing Company's stewardship, Gambrinus Gold Label was produced and packaged in straight-steel tab top cans to maintain distribution across regional markets in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and surrounding areas. The can's graphics retained classic design motifs and rich metallic and earth-toned coloring paying homage to its traditional heritage.

For breweriana collectors, the can holds special historic interest due to Pittsburgh Brewing Company's use of the label for commemorative sports releases, including special issues highlighting Ohio State University football championships and bowl appearances. Collectors also recognize variations across production batches, with differences observed in side-seam markings, typography weight, and mandatory brewery text placement. The can stands as an enduring artifact of brewery consolidation and brand preservation during the mid-to-late twentieth century.
