GB Dark Bock Flat Top Can

The GB Dark Bock flat top represents a notable piece of mid-century brewing history from Northern California. Produced by the Grace Bros. Brewing Co. out of their historic facility on 2nd Street in Santa Rosa, California, this can carried one of the brewery's staple dark offerings under their recognizable "GB" moniker.

Brewery Background

Grace Brothers was established in the late 19th century and grew into a major regional brewing presence in Sonoma County. Following Prohibition, the brewery modernized its operations and expanded distribution across the West. To maintain competitiveness against larger industrial brewers, Grace Bros. produced an extensive portfolio of proprietary and contract labels, though their core "GB"-branded line remained central to their identity.

Design and Variations

The GB Dark Bock label utilizes a bold typographic presentation centered on the signature "GB" lettering against deep, dark background tones suited for a bock style. The clean lithography emphasizes the brewery's initials alongside prominent bock labeling.

Among breweriana collectors, variations are documented across different production runs. These include noticeable differences in ink applications—such as metallic gold versus flat enamel gold finishes—as well as minor revisions to mandatory brewery text and canning codes. Containers for this brand were produced in partnership with major packaging manufacturers of the era, notably the American Can Company.

Collector Significance

Grace Bros. cans remain staples of West Coast breweriana collections. Because regional bock releases were seasonal and manufactured in smaller quantities than standard flagship lagers, the GB Dark Bock flat top holds a dedicated following among bock specialists and collectors of Northern California brewing history.
