Griesedieck Bros. GB Flat Top

The GB Light Lager Beer Flat Top Can represents a notable era in St. Louis brewing history from the Griesedieck Bros. Brewery Co. During the height of regional brewing, the Griesedieck family was an influential presence in the Midwest market, maintaining strong competition against other local giants.

Design and Features

The can features the recognizable "GB" insignia alongside bold "Light Lager Beer" lettering. Collectors appreciate the clean mid-century graphic styling, metallic accents, and distinctive typography that characterized the brewery's packaging. Production runs were produced by major container manufacturers such as the American Can Company, often accompanied by vanity lids stamped with brewery branding.

Historical Context

Griesedieck Bros. secured widespread name recognition across the Midwest through extensive advertising and sports broadcasting. Most notably, the brewery sponsored St. Louis Cardinals baseball radio broadcasts, providing legendary sportscaster Harry Caray with his early career breakthrough on the Griesedieck Brothers network. The widespread popularity of the team helped drive the distribution of these cans across multiple states.

Known Variations

Among breweriana collectors, several variations of this flat top are documented. Differences across production runs include slight text modifications on mandatory brewery statements, differing back panel layouts, variations in canning manufacturer markings, and iterations featuring slogans such as "Double Mellow".
