Gb Premium Pale Lager Beer Flat Top Can

GB Premium Pale Lager History

The GB Premium Pale Lager Beer flat top can is an iconic piece of Northern California breweriana, issued by the Grace Bros. Brewing Co. of Santa Rosa, California. Operating out of its historic facility on Second Street in Sonoma County, Grace Bros. maintained a significant regional presence following the repeal of Prohibition, producing a diverse portfolio of proprietary labels and contract brews for distribution throughout the Pacific Coast.

Design and Branding

The can's trade dress features the distinctive "GB" monogram prominently centered on the label, framed by clean typography identifying the contents as Premium Pale Lager Beer. Lithographed in collaboration with major mid-century container manufacturers such as the American Can Company, the container was engineered with bold color contrasting to stand out on retail shelves across California. The bottom rim and mandatory panels clearly identify the Santa Rosa brewing origin, cementing its status as an artifact of North Bay industrial history.

Production Variations

Among breweriana collectors, variations are known to exist across different production runs. These differences primarily appear in the mandatory text formatting along the rim—such as single-line versus multi-line phrasing—as well as slight modifications to regulatory statements, factory canning codes, and corporate text styling. Because Grace Bros. frequently updated its packaging runs over the facility's active canning years, these lithography nuances offer valuable historical insight into regional packaging evolution.

Representing one of Santa Rosa's hallmark twentieth-century commercial operations, this can remains a sought-after staple for collectors dedicated to West Coast brewing history and classic mid-century graphic packaging.
