Genesee Liebotschaner Malt Beer Flat Top Can

Genesee Liebotschaner Beer Can

The Genesee Liebotschaner Malt Beer Flat Top Can stands as one of the most celebrated and elusive treasures in American breweriana collecting. Produced by the Genesee Brewing Company of Rochester, New York, this can represents a historic brand rooted in the brewery's late 19th-century heritage, which drew its name and inspiration from the European brewing tradition of Liebotschan in Bohemia. Following the repeal of Prohibition, Genesee revived the Liebotschaner name for an all-malt brew, eventually packaging the product in flat top cans bearing opening instruction panels and Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) tax statements.

Among flat top collectors, this can holds legendary status due to its extraordinary scarcity. It is widely recognized as one of the foremost "Holy Grail" cans of the early canning era, with documented surviving examples commanding five-figure sales at premier auctions. The front of the can features bold typography and rich coloring, highlighted by warm pumpkin-orange tones that make it instantly recognizable.

Variations exist across known surviving examples. These differences include variations in lettering color, such as versions with purple text, as well as subtle differences in the layout of the instructional panels relative to the seam.

Due to the convergence of Rochester brewing history, striking lithography, and high collector demand, the Genesee Liebotschaner flat top remains one of the pinnacle centerpieces of breweriana collections.
