Gex Holburg Premium Light Beer Flat Top Can

Allentown GEX Holburg Flat Top

The Gex Holburg Premium Light Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in Mid-Atlantic contract brewing and retail history. Marketed specifically for the Government Employees Exchange (G.E.X.)—a membership-based discount department store chain created to serve government workers, military personnel, and their families—the Holburg label was packaged as a dedicated private house brand.

Brewing and Trade Identity

Although the mandatory statement on the can credits the Hofbrau Brewing Company of Allentown, Pennsylvania, this entity operated as an alternate trade identity for the historic Horlacher Brewing Company. Horlacher frequently used secondary brewery names like Hofbrau to manage contract canning and private-label lines for department stores and grocery chains without conflicting with their flagship regional products.

Graphic Presentation and Collector Appeal

The can features clean graphic design elements that integrate traditional German-American brewing motifs with the bold G.E.X. branding. This direct connection to mid-century retail history gives the can strong crossover appeal among breweriana collectors, attracting enthusiasts of Pennsylvania brewing history as well as specialists in department store and supermarket private labels.

Variations exist across different production runs, differing primarily in can company maker's marks, mandatory text placement, and minor color adjustments.
