Giant Food Premium Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Giant Food Premium Beer

Giant Food Premium Beer is a supermarket house-brand can produced for Giant Food Inc., a prominent grocery store chain based in the Mid-Atlantic region. This 12-ounce container was contract-brewed and packaged by the Eastern Brewing Corporation at their facility in Hammonton, New Jersey.

History and Context

During the era of regional grocery private-label branding, supermarket chains frequently commissioned regional brewers to produce proprietary value-line beverages. The Eastern Brewing Corporation established itself as one of the most prolific contract packaging facilities in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, filling cans for numerous regional grocery, pharmacy, and department store chains.

The Giant Food can carried the recognizable branding of the Washington, D.C.-area supermarket retailer, serving as an everyday staple across Mid-Atlantic store locations. The label prominently displays the Giant Food branding alongside mandatory legal statements attributing production to Eastern Brewing Corporation in Hammonton, New Jersey, and distribution to Giant Food Inc. of Washington, D.C.

Collector Notes and Variations

Among breweriana collectors, supermarket store-brand cans from Eastern Brewing Corporation represent an important category of contract packaging history. Although other facilities, such as The Lion, Inc. in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, also packaged beer under the Giant Food label during different manufacturing cycles, examples attributed to Hammonton remain distinct Eastern Brewing artifacts.

Known variations of this can exist, featuring minor differences in typography layout, mandatory text placement, and slight shifts in the label color scheme.
