Gibbons Famous Light Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Gibbons Famous Light Lager Tab Top

The Gibbons Famous Light Lager 12 oz tab top can is an iconic piece of mid-century breweriana from Northeastern Pennsylvania. Produced by The Lion, Inc. in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, this container represents the primary label of one of the commonwealth's most enduring regional breweries.

Following the repeal of Prohibition, the Smulowitz family took charge of the Wilkes-Barre facility and built Gibbons into a regional staple. While many competing local breweries eventually succumbed to national consolidation, The Lion maintained a dedicated following across the coal region and Mid-Atlantic markets.

The can design highlights the traditional Gibbons branding, heralding 'Famous Light Lager Beer' with classic typography and crest detailing that defined the brewery's public identity. Collector interest remains strong due to the historical significance of The Lion within Pennsylvania brewing history. Several variations of this label exist, showcasing minor shifts in mandatory text placement, can manufacturing stamps, and metallic trim detailing across different packaging runs.
