Gibbons Premium Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Gibbons Premium Tab Top Can

Produced by The Lion in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the Gibbons Premium Beer 12 oz tab top can represents the flagship label of one of the state's most enduring independent brewing companies. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the brewery was acquired and renamed The Lion, Inc., launching the Gibbons brand as its signature offering to serve the anthracite coal region and broader Mid-Atlantic market.

For breweriana collectors, the can features the classic Gibbons typography paired with the brewery's trademark lion heraldry. Over the brand's production history, The Lion produced this label in both steel and all-aluminum formats, with certain promotional runs distributed as bank tops. Known variations exist across production runs, featuring subtle differences in mandatory brewery text, metallic trim, and canning line identifiers. As The Lion eventually outlasted larger regional competitors in Wilkes-Barre—such as Stegmaier—the Gibbons tab top remains an important artifact representing Pennsylvania's postwar independent brewing era.
