Gibbons Premium Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

The Lion's Gibbons Premium Beer Can

The Gibbons Premium Beer 12 oz tab top can represents an enduring staple of northeastern Pennsylvania breweriana. Produced by The Lion, Inc. in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, this container housed the flagship brand of an independent regional brewing operation that successfully navigated the heavy consolidation of the post-Prohibition American beer market.

Brewery Heritage

The origins of The Lion trace back to 1905 with the founding of the Luzerne County Brewing Company. Following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the operation was acquired and reorganized as The Lion, Inc. by the Smulowitz family, who built their reputation around the Gibbons label. While many regional competitors in Pennsylvania eventually folded or sold out to national conglomerates, The Lion remained operational in Wilkes-Barre, keeping local labels like Gibbons alive on shelves throughout the Mid-Atlantic.

Graphic Design and Variations

The graphics on the Gibbons Premium Beer can highlight bold regional styling, featuring prominent Gibbons typography, clean contrast banding, and clear municipal attribution to Wilkes-Barre.

For collectors of regional canning history, this can provides several areas of interest:

• Production Variations: Packaging runs produced over the lifespan of the brand feature known variations in mandatory legal text, font placement, and can maker marks from major mid-century container manufacturers.
• Promotional Bank Tops: In addition to beverage-filled pull tab cans, promotional versions were manufactured featuring factory coin-slot lids, which were distributed as souvenir coin banks.
• Material Shifts: The Gibbons brand reflects the transition in canning technology over time, spanning steel body constructions through lightweight aluminum canning developments.

Today, the Gibbons Premium Beer tab top can remains a staple collectible, valued for its direct tie to the anthracite coal region's brewing history and the longevity of The Lion facility.
