Gibbons Premium Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Gibbons Premium Beer Zip Top Can

Produced by The Lion, Inc. (The Lion Brewery) in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, this 12 oz container represents the flagship brand of one of the Keystone State's most resilient independent breweries. Following the repeal of Prohibition, new ownership revived the historic Wilkes-Barre brewhouse and introduced the Gibbons brand, which quickly grew into a household name throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania and the greater Mid-Atlantic coal region.

Historical Context

During the era when regional breweries faced immense pressure from national mega-brewers, The Lion maintained strong regional loyalty through the Gibbons label. The brand's success helped The Lion outlast dozens of local competitors across the Anthracite Valley, eventually allowing the company to acquire neighboring labels like Bartels and Stegmaier.

Packaging and Graphic Features

The can features the classic Gibbons shield and signature typography against clean background enamels, presenting a classic mid-century graphic aesthetic. Major container manufacturers such as the Continental Can Company and Crown Cork & Seal produced these cans for the Wilkes-Barre facility.

Collector Notes and Variations

Collectors recognize several variations of this can across its production lifespan. Graphic and manufacturing differences include subtle changes in mandatory statutory wording, variations in brewery descriptive text, differences in can manufacturer seam logos, and metallized versus standard paint treatments. In addition to standard commercial release lids, promotional coin-bank variations featuring factory-slotted tops were also distributed.

Today, the Gibbons zip/tab top can stands as a quintessential artifact of Pennsylvania industrial brewing heritage and a staple for collectors of East Coast regional breweriana.
