Gilt Edge Brand Ale Flat Top Can

Hornell Gilt Edge Brand Ale Can

The Gilt Edge Brand Ale flat top can represents an intriguing piece of brewing history from the Hornell Brewing Company of Hornell, New York. Situated in Steuben County, the Hornell brewery operated as a notable regional packaging facility that produced both house labels and contract-brewed beverages for expansive retail networks.

Through corporate connections with the Metropolis Brewing network, Hornell served as an important canning hub for regional store-label offerings. The Gilt Edge brand was closely tied to the Grand Union Food Markets chain, serving as a dedicated retail product distributed across New York and neighboring mid-Atlantic grocery channels. The can design was tailored for high visibility on supermarket shelves, featuring prominent "Gilt Edge" script, metallic accents, and distinct ale branding.

Examples bearing the Hornell mandatory credit hold steady interest for collectors specializing in regional New York breweriana and East Coast brewery history. While Gilt Edge was packaged across partner facilities in the brewing network, cans with Hornell credits highlight the specific contract packaging operations carried out in upstate New York.

Collectors recognize variations across the Gilt Edge line, which typically exhibit subtle differences in mandatory text, brewery city credits, and distributor phrasing. The can remains a sought-after staple for enthusiasts documenting mid-century supermarket private labels and historic New York canning plants.
