Gluek's Beer Crowntainer

Gluek's Crowntainer Legacy

The Gluek's Beer Crowntainer is an essential piece of Upper Midwest breweriana, produced for the Gluek Brewing Company of Northeast Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded in 1857 by German immigrant Gottlieb Gluek, the brewery was one of the cornerstone institutions of the Twin Cities brewing industry, competing alongside regional neighbors such as Grain Belt and Minneapolis Brewing Company.

The can's artwork prominently showcases the historic Gluek's branding, defined by bold lettering, the brewery's heraldic crest, and vibrant color blocking that frequently paired navy blue, cream, and red tones. Some cans also incorporated the famous "Silver Growler" moniker or displayed the brewery's long-running slogan, "The beer that speaks for itself".

For collectors, this can is notable for its numerous production variations that document mid-century packaging regulations. Changes in federal and state laws led to distinct textual modifications across print runs. Earlier iterations bear the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement, while later issues omit the tax marking. Additionally, different mandatory alcohol statements were produced to satisfy local distribution laws across the Midwest, including variations marked "Strong," cans stating "Contains more than 4% Alcohol by Volume," and lower-strength versions designated for 3.2% markets.

Because Gluek operated primarily as a regional packaging brewery, these cans remain central artifacts of Minnesota's brewing heritage and a focal point for Crown Cork & Seal collectors.
